Breadsticks

Remove the desired number of frozen layers of pre-cut breadsticks from the case. Thaw at room temperature for approximately 5 minutes. Separate the sticks and place them 1 inch apart on lightly greased sheet pans. For plain breadsticks, brush with melted butter and allow them to rise for approximately 1 hour. Bake in a preheated 400 degree conventional oven or a 350 degree convection oven for 7 to 9 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm or allow to cool before serving.

Recipe Variations

  • Seeded Breadsticks: Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame, poppy, or caraway seeds.
  • Flavored Breadsticks: Brush with melted butter and season with Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, dill weed, herbs, minced onion, grated Cheddar cheese, or your favorite toppings. Garlic Parmesan breadsticks served with Italian sauce are especially delicious.
  • Fancy Shaped Breadsticks: Twist individual strips for a spiral effect, twist two sticks together, tie loose knots, coil into snail shapes, or form into pretzels. Brush pretzels with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  • Shorter Breadsticks: Cut each stick into halves or thirds before placing on the baking pan.
  • Crispy Chewy Breadsticks: Bake without allowing the dough to rise first.
  • Fried Breadsticks: Cut thawed breadsticks in half and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  • Herb Breadsticks: Brush one layer of 24 breadsticks with a mixture of ½ cup melted butter, 1 teaspoon garlic salt, 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, and 1 teaspoon caraway seeds.
  • Poppy Seed Onion Cheddar Breadsticks: Brush one layer of 24 breadsticks with melted butter, then sprinkle with a mixture of 2 cups grated Cheddar cheese, 6 tablespoons dried chopped onion, and 2 teaspoons poppy seeds.
  • Parmesan Dill Breadsticks: Spread a mixture of ¼ cup melted butter, ½ cup grated Parmesan and Romano cheese blend, and 1 tablespoon dill weed over one layer of 24 breadsticks.
  • Italian Breadsticks: Spread one layer of 24 breadsticks with a mixture of 2 tablespoons melted butter, 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, 2 tablespoons oregano, 1½ teaspoons garlic salt, and 1 teaspoon paprika.
  • Nutty Breadsticks: Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with a mixture of ½ cup ground walnuts, ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, 2 teaspoons poppy seeds, 1½ teaspoons rosemary, and 1 teaspoon garlic salt.
  • Cinnamon Sugar Sticks: Brush with melted butter and coat with a cinnamon and sugar mixture.
  • Lemon Nutmeg Sticks: Brush generously with melted butter and sprinkle with a mixture of 1 cup sugar, 1½ tablespoons finely grated lemon rind, and ½ teaspoon nutmeg.
  • Coffee Mug Twists: Brush 24 breadsticks with melted butter. Sprinkle one side with half of a mixture of 1 cup sugar and 3 tablespoons cinnamon or grated orange rind. Turn the sticks over, brush the other side with butter, and coat with the remaining sugar mixture. Twist two sticks together and coil into 10 ounce ovenproof mugs. Allow to rise until doubled in size. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 25 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve once the mug handles are cool enough to hold.
